ISO 9001 certification in the US: the company and the person
An ISO 9001 certificate belongs to a company: a certification body audits the company's quality management system and issues the certificate. In the US, ANAB, the accreditation body owned by ANSI, accredits certification bodies to certify organizations to ISO 9001. It holds them to ISO/IEC 17021-1, to ISO/IEC 17021-3, which sets competence requirements for QMS auditors, and to its Accreditation Rule 20.
Some customers ask a supplier for that certificate when they qualify it, and a certificate issued under accreditation can be looked up on IAF CertSearch (iafcertsearch.org). A person is certified separately, and that is what these four courses do: each one ends in a PECB credential that names you, not your employer.
ISO published ISO 9001:2026, the sixth edition, on 16 September 2026, in place of ISO 9001:2015. Each certified company makes the move through its own certification body, and that body confirms its deadline. The ISO 9001:2026 Transition course takes people who know the 2015 edition through the changes.
Is the credential accredited in the US?
Not by a US accreditation body. PECB's scope with IAS (PCB-111, certificate valid to 1 January 2027), the US body that accredits its ISO/IEC 27001 Lead and ISO 31000 Risk Manager credentials, does not include ISO 9001. The ISO 9001 Lead Auditor and Lead Implementer credentials are accredited by UKAS (21923) under ISO/IEC 17024. That is an accreditation of PECB's certification of you; the course is sold by Mindset Cyber as an authorized PECB training partner. Foundation and the 2026 Transition appear on neither schedule; PECB issues them as its own certificates.
The four ISO 9001 exams side by side
Each course price covers your first exam attempt and a second one if you need it.
| Course | Exam | Study |
|---|---|---|
| Lead Auditor | 3 hours, open book, 80 multiple choice questions, 70% to pass | 450+ pages of material; plan on 30 to 35 hours |
| Lead Implementer | 3 hours, open book, 80 multiple choice questions, 70% to pass | 500+ pages of material; plan on 30 to 35 hours |
| Foundation | 1 hour, closed book, 40 multiple choice questions, 70% to pass | 200+ pages of material; plan on 10 to 15 hours |
| ISO 9001:2026 Transition | 1 hour, closed book, 40 multiple choice questions | 150+ pages of material; two days of PECB course content |
The Lead and Foundation exams are sat online under remote proctoring, in a scheduled myPECB session you choose. Both Lead exams are open book, with a printed copy of ISO 9001, your course materials and your notes allowed. Foundation and the Transition are closed book.
Neither Lead exam needs experience to sit. Pass without it and PECB issues a Provisional credential. The full Lead Auditor or Lead Implementer credential comes later, on that same result, after five years of work experience with two in quality management, plus 300 hours of audit activity (Lead Auditor) or project activity (Lead Implementer).
Frequently asked questions
Lead Auditor or Lead Implementer: which ISO 9001 course do I need?
Lead Auditor, if your job is checking a quality management system: internal audits, supplier audits, or audits for a certification body. Lead Implementer, if your job is the system itself: building it, documenting it and keeping it certified. If you are new to ISO 9001, Foundation is the shorter start, and if you already know the 2015 edition, the Transition course covers what the 2026 edition changed.
Does a US body accredit PECB's ISO 9001 Lead Auditor?
No. ISO 9001 is missing from PECB's scope with IAS (PCB-111), a US accreditation body. The Lead Auditor and Lead Implementer credentials are accredited by UKAS (21923) under ISO/IEC 17024, an accreditation of PECB's certification of you rather than of the course. Neither schedule lists Foundation or the Transition.
Who accredits ISO 9001 certification bodies in the US?
ANAB, the ANSI National Accreditation Board, wholly owned by the American National Standards Institute, is one: it accredits ISO 9001 certification bodies under ISO/IEC 17021-1. A body accredited by another Global ACI MRA signatory can also issue an accredited certificate. A company certificate issued under accreditation can be looked up on IAF CertSearch (iafcertsearch.org); if one is missing there, ask the certification body that issued it.
Should I take the ISO 9001:2026 Transition course?
Take it if you already work with ISO 9001:2015 and need the 2026 changes: the differences clause by clause, and how to plan them in an existing quality management system. It is PECB Self-Study, two days of course content with a 1-hour, 40-question closed book exam. If you are new to ISO 9001, start with Foundation or a Lead course instead.
What do the ISO 9001 courses cost in the US?
Lead Auditor costs US$442, Lead Implementer US$442, Foundation US$163 and the 2026 Transition US$110. Each one comes with the PECB exam voucher, two exam attempts, the certification fee and 12 months of access, and the Lead Auditor and Lead Implementer prices add your first year of PECB certification maintenance. Any applicable taxes are calculated at checkout.
