ISO 31000: people are certified, companies are not

ISO 31000 sets out principles, a framework and a process for managing risk, and ISO says any organization can use it, whatever its size, activity or sector. It is a guideline rather than a requirements standard, and ISO states that it cannot be used for certification purposes, though it does give guidance for internal and external audit programs.

What can be certified is the person who applies it. The PECB ISO 31000 Risk Manager exam covers three domains:

  • Fundamental principles and concepts of risk management
  • Establishing the risk management framework
  • Application of the risk management process

It is the only ISO 31000 course on this site. If your organization needs a certificate it can show customers, choose a standard that can be certified: the ISO 27001 Lead Implementer course covers running the risk assessment inside an ISMS, which a certification body can certify.

The credential's US accreditation

PECB certifies people under ISO/IEC 17024, which sets the requirements for bodies that certify people. Its accreditation from IAS, the International Accreditation Service (PCB-111, certificate valid to 1 January 2027), a US accreditation body, includes ISO 31000 Risk Manager in its scope. That accreditation is of PECB's certification of you; the course itself is not accredited, and Mindset Cyber sells it as an authorized PECB training partner.

Your experience decides which credential you hold after the exam. Passing with none gets you ISO 31000 Provisional Risk Manager. To hold ISO 31000 Risk Manager, PECB looks for two years of professional experience, including a year in risk management, and 200 hours of project experience.

Frequently asked questions

Is there ISO 31000 certification for companies?

No. ISO says ISO 31000 is not a certifiable risk management standard and cannot be used for certification purposes, although it gives guidance for internal and external audit programs. People can be certified in applying it, which is what the PECB ISO 31000 Risk Manager credential does.

Who accredits the ISO 31000 Risk Manager credential?

IAS, the International Accreditation Service, based in the US. It accredits PECB under ISO/IEC 17024 (PCB-111), and ISO 31000 Risk Manager is in that scope. The accreditation applies to PECB's certification of you, not to the course.

How long does the ISO 31000 Risk Manager course take?

Plan for 20 to 30 hours of study, the material of a three day classroom course, at any pace within your 12 months of access. The exam is 2 hours, open book, with 60 multiple choice questions, and 70% passes.

What does the ISO 31000 Risk Manager course cost in the US?

US$240, including the PECB exam voucher, two exam attempts, the certification fee, the first year of PECB certification maintenance and 12 months of access. Any applicable taxes are calculated at checkout.
