Certifying an AI management system in the US
ISO/IEC 42001 sets requirements for an AI management system, and what gets certified is the organization's system, by a certification body. In the US, ANAB, the accreditation body of ANSI, runs an ISO/IEC 42001 program for those bodies. Its requirements for them are ISO/IEC 17021-1 and ISO/IEC 42006:2025, plus ANAB Accreditation Rule 59.
ISO/IEC 42006, which ISO published in July 2025, is the layer written for those bodies: it adds requirements specific to AI on top of ISO/IEC 17021-1. Those rules bind the certification body. Its auditors then check your organization's AI management system for conformity with ISO/IEC 42001 itself.
If your organization already works with the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, keep it. NIST says the AI RMF is intended for voluntary use. It released NIST AI 600-1, the Generative AI Profile, on 26 July 2024, and is now revising AI RMF 1.0 as part of the White House AI Action Plan. ISO/IEC 42001 is another kind of document altogether: a management system standard whose requirements a certification body audits. The courses below lead to a PECB credential for you, separate from any certificate your employer holds.
How PECB's ISO 42001 credentials are accredited
PECB certifies people under ISO/IEC 17024, which sets the requirements for bodies that certify people. Its ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer and Lead Auditor credentials are accredited by UKAS (21923), whose schedule for PECB (issue 7, 27 August 2026) lists both. They are not on PECB's scope with IAS (PCB-111, certificate valid to 1 January 2027), the US accreditation body behind PECB's ISO/IEC 27001 Lead credentials, and ISO/IEC 42001 Foundation is a PECB certificate on neither list.
Neither Lead credential carries ANAB accreditation; PECB's own ANAB accreditation is as a certificate issuer, under ANSI/ASTM E2659-24. And it is always PECB's certification of you that holds an accreditation, never the course, which Mindset Cyber sells as an authorized PECB training partner.
The ISO 42001 exams compared
Each course price covers your first exam attempt and a second one if you need it.
| Course | Exam | Study |
|---|---|---|
| Lead Implementer | 3 hours, open book, 80 multiple choice questions, 70% to pass | 30 to 40 hours with 400+ pages of material |
| Lead Auditor | 3 hours, open book, 80 multiple choice questions, 70% to pass | 30 to 40 hours with 400+ pages of material |
| Foundation | 1 hour, closed book, 40 multiple choice questions, 70% to pass | 10 to 15 hours with 200+ pages of material |
You sit each exam online, remotely proctored, in one of the scheduled sessions you book through myPECB. Both Lead exams are open book, so a printed copy of ISO/IEC 42001 can sit beside your course materials and personal notes; the Foundation exam is closed book.
Neither Lead exam needs AI experience to sit. Pass without it and PECB issues the Provisional credential; the full Lead credential needs five years of work experience, two of them in AI, plus 300 hours of AI project activities for Lead Implementer or AI audit activities for Lead Auditor.
Frequently asked questions
Which ISO 42001 course fits my role?
It depends on which side of the AI management system you are on. Building it, with its AI policy, risk management and Annex A controls, and getting it certified is Lead Implementer work. Testing it, as an internal auditor, a buyer assessing an AI vendor or a member of a certification audit team, is Lead Auditor work. Foundation is for colleagues who need the requirements without doing either job.
Does a US body accredit PECB's ISO 42001 credentials?
No. The Lead Implementer and Lead Auditor credentials hold their ISO/IEC 17024 accreditation from UKAS (21923). PECB's scope with IAS (PCB-111) leaves them out, and they carry no ANAB accreditation. Foundation is on neither the UKAS (21923) nor the IAS schedule. Where an accreditation applies, it is to PECB's certification of you, never to the course.
Can a US company be certified to ISO 42001?
Yes, through a certification body accredited for the standard. ANAB runs an ISO/IEC 42001 accreditation program in the US, and the bodies it accredits must meet ISO/IEC 17021-1, ISO/IEC 42006:2025 and ANAB Accreditation Rule 59. The last part of the Lead Implementer course covers preparing an organization for that certification audit.
We already use the NIST AI RMF. Where does ISO 42001 fit?
They do different jobs. NIST describes the AI RMF as intended for voluntary use, and a revision of AI RMF 1.0 is under way as part of the White House AI Action Plan. ISO/IEC 42001 sets the requirements an AI management system has to meet, from setting it up to improving it over time, and a certification body audits against those requirements.
What do the ISO 42001 courses cost in the US?
Lead Implementer is US$442, Lead Auditor is US$442 and Foundation is US$163. Every one of them comes with the PECB exam voucher, two exam attempts, the certification fee and 12 months of access, and the two Lead prices add your first year of PECB certification maintenance. Any applicable taxes are calculated at checkout.
