Is PECB Certification Recognized in the US? IAS, UKAS and ANAB Explained
PECB's courses lead to certifications for people, and those certifications are accredited under ISO/IEC 17024, the international standard for bodies that certify people: by IAS, an accreditation body in Brea, California, and by UKAS, the UK's national accreditation body, each for a listed set of credentials. This guide shows what each accreditation covers, what ANAB's accreditation of PECB means, and how to check a credential before you enroll.

What makes a professional certification recognized?
A certification is only as credible as the body behind it. ISO/IEC 17024 is the international standard for bodies that certify people: it sets requirements for how they run their exams, stay impartial, and award and maintain certifications. Accreditation bodies assess certification bodies against it and publish a scope that names each credential they have assessed.
So the useful question for a US buyer is not whether a credential is recognized in general, but which accreditation body assessed it, under which standard, and whether the credential you want is in the scope. If a job posting, contract or client names a specific credential or accreditation, compare its wording with the current scope documents linked on this page.
Which PECB credentials does each accreditation cover?
PECB states that it is accredited under ISO/IEC 17024 by IAS (the International Accreditation Service, a subsidiary of the International Code Council, based in Brea, California), by UKAS (the United Kingdom Accreditation Service) and by COFRAC (the Comité français d'accréditation). The table shows the credentials we sell that appear in the IAS scope and the UKAS schedule.
| PECB credential | IAS, ISO/IEC 17024 (PCB-111) | UKAS, ISO/IEC 17024 (21923) |
|---|---|---|
| ISO/IEC 27001 Lead Implementer | Listed | Listed |
| ISO/IEC 27001 Lead Auditor | Listed | Listed |
| ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer | Not listed | Listed |
| ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor | Not listed | Listed |
| ISO 9001 Lead Implementer | Not listed | Listed |
| ISO 9001 Lead Auditor | Not listed | Listed |
| ISO/IEC 27701 Lead Implementer | Listed | Not listed |
| ISO/IEC 27701 Lead Auditor | Listed | Not listed |
| ISO 31000 Risk Manager | Listed | Not listed |
The table shows that every ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 42001 and ISO 9001 Lead Implementer and Lead Auditor credential we sell is in the UKAS schedule, that both ISO/IEC 27001 credentials are in both documents, and that the ISO/IEC 27701 credentials and ISO 31000 Risk Manager are in the IAS scope.
Scopes name credentials one by one, and they change: the IAS certificate is valid to 1 January 2027, and the UKAS schedule is at issue 007. For any other PECB credential, check the current documents before you rely on an accreditation.
What does ANAB's accreditation of PECB cover?
ANAB, the ANSI National Accreditation Board, accredits PECB under ANSI/ASTM E2659-24, the Standard Practice for Certificate Programs. That is a different kind of credential from a certification, and PECB's candidate handbooks spell out the difference: "Certification refers to certification services provided according to ISO/IEC 17024. Certificate Program refers to certificate program services provided according to ANSI/ASTM E2659." The same handbooks add that certificate holders "are not certified, licensed, accredited, or registered to engage in a specific occupation or profession".
In practice, PECB's Lead credentials, such as ISO/IEC 27001 Lead Implementer, are certifications, accredited under ISO/IEC 17024 by IAS and UKAS as shown above. PECB's Foundation courses lead to a certificate instead: the credential is named "PECB Certificate Holder in ...", for example PECB Certificate Holder in ISO/IEC 27001 Foundation. A PECB credential described as ANAB-accredited is therefore a certificate program, not one of PECB's ISO/IEC 17024 certifications.
Is the exam or the credential different for US candidates?
No. The course, the materials and the exam are PECB's own and the same wherever you enroll. Online, you book one of PECB's scheduled exam sessions and sit it in the PECB Exams application, supervised remotely by a PECB invigilator. Your credential level then depends on your documented experience, not on where you live: a Lead course awards a Provisional level with no experience, and the Lead level once you have the professional experience and project or audit hours PECB sets for that credential. Each US course page lists the levels for its credential.

How to check a PECB credential before you enroll
- Find the exact credential name on the course page, for example PECB Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor.
- Open the current IAS scope and UKAS schedule and look for that name.
- Check the dates: the IAS certificate states when it took effect and how long it is valid, and the UKAS schedule its issue number and date.
- If an employer, contract or client asks for a specific credential or accreditation, compare its wording with the scope.

Frequently asked questions
Is PECB certification recognized in the US?
PECB's certifications are accredited under ISO/IEC 17024, the international standard for bodies that certify people, by IAS, an accreditation body based in Brea, California, and by UKAS in the UK, each for a listed set of credentials. ISO/IEC 27001 Lead Auditor and Lead Implementer, for example, are in both the IAS scope and the UKAS schedule, and ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor and Lead Implementer are in the UKAS schedule. Check the current scope documents for the exact credential you want.
Does ANAB accredit PECB?
Yes, for certificate programs. ANAB, the ANSI National Accreditation Board, accredits PECB under ANSI/ASTM E2659-24, the Standard Practice for Certificate Programs. PECB's certifications, such as ISO/IEC 27001 Lead Auditor, are accredited under ISO/IEC 17024 by IAS and UKAS, not by ANAB.
Which accreditation covers PECB ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor?
UKAS, under ISO/IEC 17024. Its schedule 21923, issue 007, dated 27 August 2026, lists PECB Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer and PECB Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor. The IAS scope effective 30 October 2025 does not list ISO/IEC 42001.
What is the difference between a PECB certification and a PECB certificate?
A certification is awarded under ISO/IEC 17024 and a certificate under ANSI/ASTM E2659. In the words of PECB's candidate handbooks, "Certified" refers to ISO/IEC 17024 certifications' requirements and "Certificate holder" refers to ASTM E2659 certificate programs' requirements, and certificate holders "are not certified, licensed, accredited, or registered to engage in a specific occupation or profession". PECB's Foundation courses lead to a certificate, named "PECB Certificate Holder in ...", and its Lead courses to a certification.
Is the PECB exam the same for US candidates?
Yes. The course, the materials and the exam are PECB's own and the same wherever you enroll. Online, you book one of PECB's scheduled exam sessions and sit it in the PECB Exams application, supervised remotely by a PECB invigilator. Your credential level then depends on your documented experience, not on your country.
