ISO 42001 Lead Auditor career guide
How to Become an ISO 42001 Lead Auditor (2026 Guide)
Becoming a PECB Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor takes a pass in PECB's open-book exam, five years of professional experience with two of them in AI management, 300 hours of audit activities and an application to PECB (the Professional Evaluation and Certification Board); PECB's five-day Lead Auditor course is the usual first step. No experience is needed to sit the exam: with less, the same pass leads to the Provisional Auditor or Auditor level, and you upgrade later. Through a PECB partner course there is no separate exam or application fee: the course is A$699 + GST (A$768.90 inc. GST), with the exam voucher, two exam attempts and the certification fee included.

What does an ISO 42001 lead auditor do?
An ISO 42001 lead auditor plans, conducts and closes audits of an artificial intelligence management system, or AIMS, against ISO/IEC 42001:2023, and leads the audit team. An AIMS is the set of policies, processes, controls and records an organisation uses to manage the AI systems it develops, provides or uses. ISO/IEC 42001, published in December 2023 and described by ISO as the world's first AI management system standard, sets the requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving an AIMS. PECB's certification scheme describes the Lead Auditor credential as being for individuals aiming to demonstrate the competence to audit an AI management system and lead an audit team. People hold the credential; organisations are certified against ISO/IEC 42001 by a certification body, never by ISO itself (see our ISO 42001 guide for the standard).
What the audit work involves
PECB's exam domains describe the job. Before the audit, the lead auditor confirms the audit objectives, scope and criteria and whether the audit is feasible, and agrees the terms of the engagement with the auditee. During it, the team reviews documented information at stage 1, then at stage 2 gathers evidence by interview, observation, document review, sampling and technical verification, testing the requirements in clauses 4 to 10 of ISO/IEC 42001 and the Annex A controls. At the close come the closing meeting, the audit report, nonconformity reports and the review of the auditee's action plans. Over time, the lead auditor manages the audit program: follow-ups, surveillance audits and recertification audits.
First, second and third-party audits
PECB's exam expects you to tell the three apart:
- First-party audits: internal audits an organisation runs on its own AIMS.
- Second-party audits: a customer, or someone acting for it, audits a supplier, such as a provider of AI systems or services.
- Third-party audits: an independent certification body audits the AIMS for certification, first in two stages, then with surveillance audits and a recertification audit.
Two sets of standards frame the work. ISO 19011 is ISO's guidance on auditing management systems: the principles of auditing, managing an audit program and conducting audits. Certification bodies accredited for ISO/IEC 42001 are held to ISO/IEC 17021-1, the requirements for bodies that audit and certify management systems, and ISO/IEC 42006:2025, which adds the requirements for auditing and certifying AI management systems; JASANZ accredits them in Australia and New Zealand, and UKAS in the UK. PECB's course teaches you to plan, conduct and close an ISO/IEC 42001 audit in line with ISO/IEC 17021-1 requirements and ISO 19011 guidelines.
What is the difference between ISO 42001 lead auditor and lead implementer?
A Lead Implementer builds and runs the AIMS: PECB's course covers how to plan, implement, manage, monitor, maintain and continually improve one. A Lead Auditor assesses whether an AIMS conforms to ISO/IEC 42001. Both PECB exams are 80 multiple-choice questions, 3 hours and open book, and one person may hold both credentials. The implementer side is in our ISO 42001 Lead Implementer guide and on the PECB ISO 42001 Lead Implementer course page.
ISO 42001 Lead Auditor prerequisites: what you need before starting
What PECB asks for
PECB's main requirement for the course is a fundamental understanding of ISO/IEC 42001 and AI principles and concepts. PECB's credential requirements list no degree, and no experience is needed to enrol or to sit the exam.
Do you need audit experience to sit the exam?
No. The experience rules apply when you apply for a credential, not before. One exam serves four levels, from Provisional Auditor with no experience to Senior Lead Auditor; the table below gives the years and audit hours for each.
Optional first step: ISO 42001 Foundation
If ISO/IEC 42001 or AI management systems are new to you, start with the PECB ISO 42001 Foundation eLearning, A$279 + GST (A$306.90 inc. GST). PECB sets it as a two-day course with no prerequisites, and it is not required for the Lead Auditor course. Our ISO 42001 training guide sets out which course to take first.
The 5-step certification process
-
Complete ISO 42001 Foundation training (optional)
Take the PECB ISO 42001 Foundation course, A$279 + GST (A$306.90 inc. GST), if AI management systems and ISO/IEC 42001 are new to you; otherwise skip it.
-
Enrol in the PECB ISO 42001 Lead Auditor eLearning
Mindset Cyber delivers PECB's own ISO 42001 Lead Auditor course on myPECB at A$699 + GST (A$768.90 inc. GST): 24 sections, over 400 pages of course material, video lessons and quizzes. The price includes the PECB exam voucher, two exam attempts, the certification fee, the first year of PECB certification maintenance and 12 months of access; completion earns 31 CPD credits.
-
Pass the PECB ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor exam
The exam is 80 multiple-choice questions, 3 hours, open book, 70% to pass, sat online in the PECB Exams app, in one of PECB's scheduled online exam sessions that you pick in myPECB (the full format is below). A second attempt is included; PECB asks you to complete the exam, the retake and the certification application within 12 months of purchase. Mindset Prep is our optional practice-question app.
-
Apply to PECB for the credential your experience supports
Passing the exam does not certify you. In myPECB choose Apply for Certification, pick the level your experience supports, add your work experience and audit hours, and name two professional references. They must be people who have worked with you, not people you supervise or relatives, and PECB's system sends them an online questionnaire. The certification fee is already paid. PECB's candidate handbook gives you 12 months from purchase to apply; PECB emails the decision, and if you are approved you download your certificate and digital badge from myPECB.
-
Keep the credential current, and upgrade as your audit hours grow
PECB certifications are valid for three years. They renew when you report your CPD in myPECB (90 hours per three-year cycle for a Lead Auditor), pay the Annual Maintenance Fee and keep to the PECB Code of Ethics. PECB's Certification Maintenance Policy lists that fee at USD 390 per certificate for each three-year cycle, paid in myPECB year by year or for all three years at once; the first year is in the course price. A Provisional credential needs no CPD and pays no fee. Miss the CPD or the fee and the credential is suspended for up to 12 months while you catch up; if they are still outstanding after that, PECB can revoke it. An upgrade is a new application (USD 100; PECB decides whether another exam is needed).
PECB's four Auditor credentials: Provisional to Senior Lead
| PECB Certified ISO/IEC 42001 credential | Professional experience | AIMS audit activities |
|---|---|---|
| Provisional Auditor | None | None |
| Auditor | Two years, one of them in AI management | 200 hours |
| Lead Auditor | Five years, two of them in AI management | 300 hours |
| Senior Lead Auditor | Ten years, seven of them in AI management | 1,000 hours |
All four sit the same PECB ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor exam (or an equivalent exam PECB accepts) and sign the PECB Code of Ethics. PECB's candidate handbook words the experience as work experience in AI management; its course page says work experience in AI.
PECB's candidate handbook says valid audit activities follow best audit practices and include:
- planning an audit
- managing an audit program
- drafting audit reports
- drafting nonconformity reports
- drafting audit working documents
- reviewing and managing documented information related to the audit
- conducting on-site audits
- following up on nonconformities
- leading an audit team.
Keep a dated audit log from day one; PECB checks your audit hours against the level you apply for.
The PECB ISO 42001 Lead Auditor exam
Is the ISO 42001 lead auditor exam hard?
It is a professional exam, not a memory test: 80 multiple-choice questions in 3 hours, each with three options, mixing stand-alone questions with scenario sets of five. PECB says you have to apply the concepts from the course, analyse problems and evaluate alternatives. Of the 80, 36 measure comprehension, application and analysis, and 44 measure evaluation; PECB places the evaluation questions in three domains: fundamental audit concepts and principles (16), conducting an ISO/IEC 42001 audit (19) and managing an ISO/IEC 42001 audit program (9). The pass mark is 70%; PECB's handbook and exam rules give no pass rate, and we publish none either.
Is the ISO 42001 lead auditor exam open book?
Yes. In the online exam you may use a hard copy of ISO/IEC 42001 (or a copy bought through the myPECB store, which opens inside the PECB Exams app), the PECB training course materials and your personal notes from the course, either in the app or printed, and a hard-copy dictionary.
What the exam covers: the seven domains
PECB's candidate handbook splits the 80 questions across seven domains (topic areas):
- Fundamental principles and concepts of an AI management system: 12 questions.
- AI management system requirements: 8.
- Fundamental audit concepts and principles: 16.
- Preparing an ISO/IEC 42001 audit: 9.
- Conducting an ISO/IEC 42001 audit: 19.
- Closing an ISO/IEC 42001 audit: 7.
- Managing an ISO/IEC 42001 audit program: 9.
Sitting the exam online
Online exams run in the PECB Exams application, supervised remotely by a PECB Invigilator through the app and your camera: you need a valid ID, cannot use phones, tablets or other secondary devices, and must be present at least 30 minutes before the start. Mindset Cyber's eLearning for this course is in English; you choose the exam language when you book, and PECB lists this exam in 10 languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Turkish, Ukrainian, Korean and Japanese. If you sit it in a language that is not your first, PECB can give you 30 extra minutes on a Lead exam when you ask on the day. PECB shows the result of an online multiple-choice exam as soon as you submit it and emails it too; if you did not pass, the email lists the domains where you performed poorly. A second attempt is included within the 12 months from purchase that PECB allows for the exam, the retake and the application, with no limit on retakes after that (retake fees apply; PECB's exam rules give no amount). A failed first attempt cannot be re-sat until 15 days after the exam date, so sit the first attempt at least a month before your 12 months end.
How long does it take to become an ISO 42001 lead auditor?
For a person, there are three parts. An organisation's certification is a separate project: see our ISO 42001 certification cost guide.
The course: 30 to 40 hours over two to four weeks
PECB structures the course as five days, with the exam on day five: an introduction to the AIMS and ISO/IEC 42001, audit principles and preparing and starting an audit, on-site audit activities, closing the audit, then the exam. The eLearning is self-paced; our estimate (not a PECB figure) is 30 to 40 hours over two to four weeks, and you book the exam within your 12 months of access.
Provisional Auditor: apply once your pass is recorded
You can apply for Provisional Auditor as soon as your pass shows in myPECB. PECB's system sends your two references an online questionnaire, the Certification Department checks the application, and PECB emails the outcome. PECB's handbook gives no processing time.
Lead Auditor: when the experience is met
The full title waits for five years of professional experience, two of them in AI management, and 300 hours of audit activities. Without them, hold a lower level and upgrade later.
Common roadblocks
- No dated audit log, so the hours cannot be proven.
- References who are people you supervise or relatives, or who are slow to answer.
- Missing the handbook's 12-month window from purchase; after that, PECB reopens an application only on a written request, for a fee.
How much does it cost to become an ISO 42001 lead auditor?
Foundation and Mindset Prep on this list are optional. The course price covers the exam, a retake and the certification application; the recurring cost after that is PECB's maintenance fee, from the second year, plus USD 100 if you later apply to upgrade.
- PECB ISO 42001 Lead Auditor eLearning: A$699 + GST (A$768.90 inc. GST), including the PECB exam voucher, two exam attempts, the certification fee, the first year of PECB certification maintenance and 12 months of access.
- PECB certification application: included (USD 500 if you apply without a partner course).
- PECB maintenance fee: USD 390 per certificate for each three-year cycle, as PECB's Certification Maintenance Policy lists it, paid in myPECB year by year or for all three years at once; the first year is in the course price; none for Provisional Auditor.
- Optional ISO 42001 Foundation: A$279 + GST (A$306.90 inc. GST).
- Optional exam practice: Mindset Prep, A$99 + GST (A$108.90 inc. GST) for a year when added at the course checkout.
- The standard: not included. The open-book exam allows a hard copy of ISO/IEC 42001, or a copy bought through the myPECB store, which opens in the PECB Exams app; iso.org also sells it.
Australian prices attract 10% GST, shown before checkout.
How much is the ISO 42001 lead auditor exam?
There is no separate exam fee through a PECB partner course: PECB's exam rules say the training fee includes the first exam attempt, a retake, the certification application fee and the first year of the Annual Maintenance Fee.
Can you take the exam without the course?
Yes. PECB's exam rules say no specific course is required for its certification exams, and you can book the exam directly in myPECB. PECB's 2026 Lead Auditor candidate handbook prices that route at USD 1,000 for the exam and USD 500 for the certification application. PECB's help centre says it includes one exam attempt and no access to the official training materials, and a retake needs another exam fee.
How much does ISO 42001 certification cost for an organisation?
That is a different spend: a certification body's audit fees plus the work of building the AIMS, covered in our ISO 42001 certification cost guide. For an individual, the costs are the ones listed above.
Lead Auditor course price by country
The course, exam and inclusions are the same in every market; only the currency and tax line change.

PECB eLearning or PECB Self-Study: what each format includes
Two of PECB's delivery formats are self-paced. PECB eLearning is delivered by PECB Certified Trainers in pre-recorded video format, with quizzes and the official course materials on myPECB. PECB Self-Study gives access to the official PECB course materials to study at your own pace; PECB makes its video lessons available only in eLearning. PECB describes Self-Study as "suitable for participants with considerable knowledge of the subject who do not require assisted lecturing" (taught lessons). PECB's CPD Policy (June 2026) credits a five-day training course or eLearning with 31 CPD credits and Self-Study of the same five-day course with 16. Mindset Cyber sells the ISO 42001 Lead Auditor as PECB eLearning; our PECB eLearning vs Self-Study guide compares the two formats.
ISO 42001 lead auditor jobs and career paths
The credential fits these roles:
- Internal auditor: runs first-party audits of the organisation's own AIMS, prepares it for certification and keeps it ready between surveillance audits.
- Supplier auditor: runs second-party audits of AI suppliers and service providers for a customer, for example within a procurement or third-party risk team.
- Certification body auditor: audits other organisations' AI management systems for ISO/IEC 42001 certification as part of a certification body's audit team, and as lead auditor leads that team.
- GRC consultant (governance, risk and compliance): helps organisations prepare for ISO/IEC 42001 certification with gap assessments and internal audits.
We do not publish salary figures. Check current listings for your city and industry.
Lead Auditor and Lead Implementer combined
Holding both lets you move between building an AI management system and assessing one; the implementer side is in our ISO 42001 Lead Implementer guide.
Is the PECB ISO 42001 Lead Auditor recognised?
PECB issues it as a certification under ISO/IEC 17024, the standard for bodies that certify people, and UKAS accredits PECB for it by name. Any employer can check a PECB certificate, and the course and exam are taken online from any market we sell to.
- Accreditation. UKAS (the United Kingdom Accreditation Service) accredits PECB under ISO/IEC 17024: its schedule of accreditation for PECB, number 21923, issue 007 of 27 August 2026, lists the PECB Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor under PECB's ISO/IEC 42001 Certification Scheme, version 1.2; it does not list the Provisional, Auditor or Senior Lead levels. PECB's other ISO/IEC 17024 accreditations, from IAS (the International Accreditation Service) and COFRAC (Comité français d'accréditation), do not list any ISO/IEC 42001 credential.
- Verification. Any employer can check a PECB certificate on PECB's Certificate Verification page, and you download a digital badge with your certificate from myPECB.
- Mindset Cyber and PECB. Mindset Cyber is a PECB Authorised Titanium Partner, PECB's highest partner level.
Frequently asked questions
How do I become an ISO 42001 lead auditor?
Five steps: optional ISO 42001 Foundation; the PECB ISO 42001 Lead Auditor course, which Mindset Cyber sells as PECB eLearning at A$699 + GST (A$768.90 inc. GST); the PECB exam, 80 multiple-choice questions in 3 hours, open book, 70% to pass; an application in myPECB for the credential level your experience supports; then CPD and PECB's maintenance fee to keep it. With no experience you can apply for Provisional Auditor once you pass; the full Lead Auditor title needs five years of professional experience, two of them in AI management, and 300 hours of audit activities.
What does an ISO 42001 lead auditor do?
Plans, conducts and closes audits of an AI management system (AIMS) against ISO/IEC 42001 and leads the audit team: confirming the audit objectives, scope and criteria, running the stage 1 and stage 2 audits, gathering and evaluating evidence, writing nonconformity reports and the audit report, and evaluating the auditee's action plans. The audit can be first-party (internal), second-party (a customer auditing a supplier) or third-party (a certification body auditing for certification).
Can I become an ISO 42001 lead auditor without experience?
You can take the course and sit the exam with no experience, then apply for the PECB Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Provisional Auditor credential, which needs none. The Lead Auditor credential itself needs five years of professional experience, two of them in AI management, and 300 hours of audit activities such as planning audits, conducting on-site audits, drafting audit and nonconformity reports and leading an audit team. Upgrade when you have the hours.
Do I need ISO 42001 Foundation before Lead Auditor?
No. PECB's main requirement for the Lead Auditor course is a fundamental understanding of ISO/IEC 42001 and AI principles and concepts; Foundation is not required. The PECB ISO 42001 Foundation, A$279 + GST (A$306.90 inc. GST), has no prerequisites and suits people new to the standard.
Is the ISO 42001 lead auditor exam open book?
Yes. PECB allows a hard copy of ISO/IEC 42001 (or a copy bought through the myPECB store, which opens inside the PECB Exams app), the PECB training course materials and your personal notes from the course, in the app or printed, plus a hard-copy dictionary.
How hard is the ISO 42001 lead auditor exam?
It is a professional exam that asks you to apply audit concepts: 80 multiple-choice questions in 3 hours, each with three options, some in scenario sets of five, and 44 of the 80 measure evaluation and the other 36 comprehension, application and analysis. It is open book with a 70% pass mark, and a second attempt is included in the course price. PECB's handbook and exam rules give no pass rate.
What is the passing score for the ISO 42001 lead auditor exam?
70%. PECB shows the result of an online multiple-choice exam as soon as you submit it, and if you did not pass, the email that follows lists the domains where you performed poorly.
What are the domains of the ISO 42001 lead auditor exam?
Seven: fundamental principles and concepts of an AI management system (12 questions), AI management system requirements (8), fundamental audit concepts and principles (16), preparing an ISO/IEC 42001 audit (9), conducting an ISO/IEC 42001 audit (19), closing an ISO/IEC 42001 audit (7) and managing an ISO/IEC 42001 audit program (9).
How long does it take to become an ISO 42001 lead auditor?
The course and exam take weeks: PECB structures the course as five days, and our estimate for the self-paced eLearning (not a PECB figure) is 30 to 40 hours over two to four weeks. You can apply for Provisional Auditor once your pass is recorded. The full Lead Auditor title waits until you have five years of professional experience, two of them in AI management, and 300 audit hours.
How much does ISO 42001 lead auditor certification cost?
Through Mindset Cyber, A$699 + GST (A$768.90 inc. GST) for the PECB ISO 42001 Lead Auditor eLearning, with the exam voucher, two exam attempts, the certification fee and the first year of PECB maintenance included. After that, PECB's Certification Maintenance Policy lists the Annual Maintenance Fee at USD 390 per certificate for each three-year cycle, paid in myPECB year by year or for all three years at once.
Can I take the ISO 42001 lead auditor exam without the course?
Yes. You can book the exam directly with PECB in myPECB. PECB's 2026 candidate handbook prices a Lead exam at USD 1,000 and the certification application at USD 500, and PECB's help centre says that route includes one exam attempt and no access to the official training materials, with another exam fee for a retake.
Can an individual be ISO 42001 certified?
Not to ISO/IEC 42001 itself: certification to the standard is for an organisation's AI management system, and a certification body issues it (ISO does not certify). A person holds a credential about the standard, such as the PECB Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor, which PECB issues under ISO/IEC 17024, the standard for bodies that certify people.
What is the difference between ISO 42001 lead auditor and lead implementer?
A Lead Implementer plans, implements, manages, monitors, maintains and continually improves an AI management system; a Lead Auditor audits one against ISO/IEC 42001. Both PECB exams are 80 multiple-choice questions in 3 hours, open book, and one person can hold both credentials.
Who can audit ISO 42001?
An organisation runs its own internal (first-party) audits with auditors it selects to keep the audit objective and impartial, and a customer can audit a supplier (second-party). Certification audits are third-party audits by a certification body. Certification bodies accredited for ISO/IEC 42001 are held to ISO/IEC 17021-1 and ISO/IEC 42006:2025; JASANZ accredits them in Australia and New Zealand, and UKAS in the UK; our ISO 42001 certification cost guide explains how to check a body's accreditation in other countries. ISO itself does not certify.
How long is the ISO 42001 lead auditor certification valid?
Three years. PECB renews it at the end of each three-year cycle if you have reported your CPD (90 hours over the cycle for a Lead Auditor), paid the Annual Maintenance Fee and kept to the PECB Code of Ethics; no new exam is needed. A Provisional Auditor credential has no CPD requirement and no maintenance fee.
Is the PECB ISO 42001 lead auditor certification recognised?
UKAS (the United Kingdom Accreditation Service) accredits PECB under ISO/IEC 17024 for the PECB Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor: UKAS's schedule of accreditation 21923, issue 007 of 27 August 2026, names it; it does not list the Provisional, Auditor or Senior Lead levels. PECB's ISO/IEC 17024 accreditations from IAS and COFRAC cover other credentials and do not list ISO/IEC 42001. Any employer can check a PECB certificate on PECB's Certificate Verification page.
Can I do the ISO 42001 lead auditor course and exam online?
Yes. The eLearning runs on myPECB, the exam is taken in the PECB Exams app under remote supervision, and the application is made in myPECB. Nothing requires attendance in person.
Is there an ISO 42001 lead auditor practice exam?
PECB's course includes quizzes, some of them scenario-based, which PECB says are designed to closely replicate the format of the certification exam. Mindset Prep, our optional exam-practice app, adds practice questions for this exam on the web, iOS and Android: A$99 + GST (A$108.90 inc. GST) for a year when added at the course checkout, or a subscription at mindsetprep.com.au.
Is the ISO 42001 lead auditor certification worth it?
It depends on your role. The course price covers PECB's exam, a second attempt, the certification application and the first year of maintenance; the exam-only route is USD 1,000 plus USD 500. The course materials are allowed in the open-book exam, the eLearning earns 31 CPD credits, and UKAS accredits PECB for the Lead Auditor credential itself.
