What the CompTIA Security+ Exam Actually Costs in 2026

The voucher itself is one cost. The realistic all-in budget, including study materials, practice exams, and potential retake, is another. This guide breaks down what Australian candidates actually spend on the path from wanting Security+ to holding it, with current 2026 prices.

The exam voucher: what it costs and what it includes

The CompTIA Security+ exam voucher is a single-use code that pays for one attempt at the SY0-701 exam at any Pearson VUE testing centre worldwide.

OptionPrice (AUD)What is included

From CompTIA directly

CompTIA publishes a US dollar and an Australian dollar list price on the CompTIA Store. It raised exam prices on 1 June 2026, so the SY0-701 voucher's US dollar price was US$439 as at 26 October 2026, up from US$425. Check the current Australian dollar figure on the store before you compare.

From other Australian Authorised Partners

A small number of other Australian CompTIA Authorised Partners sell vouchers at varying prices. Bundle inclusions differ. Some bundle self-study packages with the voucher, others do not. Compare what is actually included when comparing headline prices.

The hidden costs most people forget

The voucher is the most visible cost. The realistic total spend across the certification pathway includes study materials, practice exams, and a possible retake.

Study materials

PathCost (AUD)
Free online video courses and study notes$0
Self-purchased exam-prep bookVaries by title and format
CompTIA CertMaster Learn (CompTIA's official online learning platform)Sold with the exam voucher in our Security+ training bundles, or see CompTIA's store

Spending on study materials varies widely. The self-study path (free video courses plus practice tests) can be enough if you are disciplined.

Practice exams

Practice exams are the highest-value paid study material. They reveal weak areas before the real exam.

Retake (if needed)

If you do not pass on the first attempt:

  • With a single voucher, you need a new one: another A$599 + GST (A$658.90 inc. GST) from Mindset Cyber. With the A$799 + GST (A$878.90 inc. GST) voucher with Retake Assurance, you book the retake with the same voucher code.
  • CompTIA mandates a 14-day waiting period between the second and third attempt.
  • Extra study time, typically 2 to 4 weeks of focused weak-area work.

If you suspect you might need a retake (for example, this is your first cert and you have not studied formally in years), the voucher with Retake Assurance, at A$799 + GST (A$878.90 inc. GST) against A$599 + GST (A$658.90 inc. GST) for the single voucher, effectively prices the retake at less than half the standalone voucher price. Worth the extra spend if there is any doubt.

A separate but related fact: Mindset Cyber's refund policy on unused unredeemed vouchers is 7 days from purchase, less a 10% admin fee. The 14-day retake gap above is a CompTIA-mandated wait between attempts. Not a refund window.

Realistic total budget scenarios

Voucher and bundle prices in these scenarios are before GST. Study and practice amounts are examples only; check current prices before you budget.

Scenario A: self-study path, single attempt pass

ItemCost (AUD)
Mindset Cyber voucher (single user)$599
Study materials (free video courses plus one book)$70
Practice exam subscription$150
Totalaround $820

Scenario B: paid study path, single attempt pass

ItemCost (AUD)
Mindset Cyber Security+ Learn and Exam Bundle (CompTIA CertMaster Learn and the exam voucher with Retake Assurance)$1,459
Practice exam subscription$200
Totalaround $1,660

Scenario C: retake budget, conservative candidate

ItemCost (AUD)
Mindset Cyber voucher with Retake Assurance$799
Study materials$70
Practice exams$150
Totalaround $1,020

Scenario D: failed first attempt without Retake Assurance

ItemCost (AUD)
Mindset Cyber voucher (single user)$599
Study materials$70
Practice exams$150
Another voucher after a fail$599
Totalaround $1,420

Before GST, the voucher with Retake Assurance (Scenario C) costs around AUD 200 more than passing first time on a single voucher (Scenario A), and around AUD 400 less than failing without it and buying another voucher (Scenario D).

Is it worth it: what Security+ changes for Australian candidates

Adding Security+ to your CV in Australia typically correlates with:

  • A step up in pay when moving from generalist IT into a cybersecurity role

the size varies by city and employer, so check current advertised ranges on Seek before you decide.

  • Access to cyber analyst and SOC roles

that would not have screened you in without it.

  • Eligibility for Australian government and defence cybersecurity roles

where Security+ is a baseline credential.

Net financial calculation: a cert that costs around AUD 820 to 1,660 to obtain, plus GST on the voucher or bundle, is small next to the pay difference between a generalist IT role and a cybersecurity role, so it pays back quickly once it enables that move. The ROI is among the highest of any IT certification on the Australian market.

Should you buy now or wait

SY0-701 launched in November 2023 and retires on 11 June 2027. Its successor, SY0-801, is expected on or around 17 November 2026. A voucher is valid for 12 months from purchase, but CompTIA's terms let an exam's retirement date override that, so plan to sit SY0-701 before 11 June 2027. For which version to sit, see SY0-701 vs SY0-801.

If you will sit SY0-701 before it retires on 11 June 2027, buy the voucher now. Prices are stable but periodically nudge upward. Locking in current pricing is sensible.

If you will sit after 11 June 2027, hold off: SY0-701 will have retired by then.

GST and employer expense claims

Mindset Cyber issues Australian buyers an AUD tax invoice under an Australian ABN with 10% GST itemised. If you buy elsewhere, check what documentation the seller issues before you rely on it for a claim.

This matters for:

  • Employer reimbursement. Most Australian finance teams want a Tax Invoice showing the ABN and the GST.
  • GST credit claim if your employer is GST-registered.
  • Personal tax deduction under D5 (work-related self-education) on individual tax returns. You will need the GST tax invoice as substantiating documentation.

For employees claiming Security+ as a work-related self-education deduction, the ATO's general rules apply: the certification must have a sufficient connection to your current income-producing activities. If you are already working in IT or cyber, the connection is straightforward. If you are using Security+ to enter cyber for the first time, the ATO typically does not allow the deduction.

Talk to your accountant before claiming. Mindset Cyber does not provide tax advice. The above is general information only.

Frequently asked questions

How much does CompTIA Security+ cost in AUD?

The official SY0-701 voucher from Mindset Cyber (a CompTIA Authorised Partner) is AUD 599 + GST, which is AUD 658.90 including GST, as a single-user purchase. With Retake Assurance it is AUD 799 + GST, which is AUD 878.90 including GST, and the same voucher then covers one retake of the same exam version if the first attempt does not pass, within its 12 months and before CompTIA retires that exam version. CompTIA publishes both a US dollar and an Australian dollar list price on the CompTIA Store; its US dollar price for the single voucher was US$439 as at 26 October 2026. Check the current Australian dollar figure there before you compare.

Does the CompTIA Security+ voucher include training?

No. The voucher pays for the exam only. Study materials are separate. Common paths for Security+ preparation include free online video courses, CompTIA CertMaster Learn (CompTIA's official online learning), a study book and a practice question product. Many candidates combine free video lessons with one paid practice exam product. If you want CompTIA's official training with the exam, Mindset Cyber also sells Security+ training bundles: CertMaster with an SY0-701 exam voucher that includes Retake Assurance. We do not run our own Security+ classes.

Is there a retake discount on CompTIA Security+?

CompTIA does not offer a retake discount on the official voucher. Mindset Cyber's voucher with Retake Assurance is the closest equivalent: at A$799 + GST (A$878.90 inc. GST), against A$599 + GST (A$658.90 inc. GST) for the single voucher, the same voucher covers one retake of the same exam version if your first attempt does not pass, within its 12 months and before CompTIA retires that exam version. CompTIA imposes a 14-day waiting period before a third or subsequent attempt. Unused unredeemed vouchers are refundable for 7 days from purchase, less a 10% admin fee.

Can I claim CompTIA Security+ on my Australian tax?

For employees already working in IT or cybersecurity, Security+ typically meets the ATO's "sufficient connection" test for D5 (work-related self-education) deductions. For candidates entering cybersecurity for the first time, the ATO usually does not allow the deduction. Authorised Partners like Mindset Cyber issue AUD-priced GST tax invoices with a valid Australian ABN; this is the substantiating documentation a deduction requires. Mindset Cyber does not provide tax advice. Speak to your accountant before claiming.
